Nintendo Switch Online Launch

Nintendo has announced their plans for launching their own online service. Online gaming has been free on the Switch so far, but with these changes to a paid service coming in, there are also a lot of incentives included in the deal.

They include as follows:

NES Classics Online

Nintendo is launching the service with twenty online-playable versions of their classics. This list is taken from the Japanese press announcement so if these differ slightly when they reach Western shores, don’t be surprised:

  • Ice climber
  • Soccer
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Tennis
  • Doctor Mario
  • Donkey Kong
  • Balloon Fight
  • Mario Bros.
  • Nintendo has announced they plan to add to this list continuously, this isn’t a bad list to start with and the idea of paying a subscription to play some classics is appealing.
  • Online Play

  • The real seller here is the announcement of Online Play for supporting titles. Games such as Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart Deluxe Edition amongst others will make use of this service when it switches to a paid service.
  • Cloud Save

  • All game saves will be backed up to the cloud. No longer will there be lost data in the case of a console crash, you’ll be able to pull all your saves back down from the cloud.
  • Smartphone App

  • As with any good service, Nintendo is launching a smartphone app to go with their online service. This will be used to interface with the online service to stay in touch with friends and coordinate online sessions.
  • Subscriber Perks

  • And lastly, Nintendo is planning to give subscribers lots of perks. We’re not sure what these are yet, but expect lots of goodies.
  • Pricing

  • Prices for the service in GBP are as follows:
    • 1 month: £3.49
      3 month: £6.99
      Year: £17.99
Family: £31.49 a year. The Family Group will support up to eight Nintendo accounts.

The service is due to launch in the latter half of September 2018. Stay tuned for further updates as and when it launches.
