Sony just can’t seem to get it right, when it comes to cross-play with other consoles. Whilst Nintendo and Xbox, for the most part, seem happy to let their customers kiss and be friends, Sony has taken a strict ‘You’re not to play with those children approach’.
It’s true that certain titles like Street Fighter V allow cross-play against PC opponents, for Fortnite, the world’s most popular game, Sony has taken their ball back inside and won’t let anyone else join in the fun, not unless it’s in a Sony playground.
To make it worse, it’s the CEO of Sony Corporation that has dropped this clanger, and this time it was quite publicly and not behind the guise of a well-written tweet or press statement. When quizzed about crossplay at the IFA technology show in Berlin, Kenichiro Yoshida had this to say:
‘On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief.’
This isn’t shocking news that Sony thinks their platform is the best but does come across as having a whiff of arrogance about it.
If there are further developments, you will hear about them here.
